By Teasy Steele and Jason Oakshott, Club Competition Secretaries
The weather Gods smiled on the Club Finals weekend, and spectators and Finalists alike enjoyed an excellent vibe around the Green and Clubhouse as matches were contested in the mid-September sunshine, despite a brisk wind.
The culmination of scores of rounds played during the past months saw new members take on seasoned stalwarts, old friends pitched against each other in good-humoured rivalry, and emerging new talent within the competitive matches drawing cheers and gasps from the ‘gallery’.
Thirteen finals were played over the two days (some lasting 3 hours), 32 trophies presented, photographs taken for posterity, countless celebratory drinks enjoyed from the bar and a wonderful atmosphere, which is the essence of the Club, prevailed over the two days.
On behalf of all the Finalists, and the Competition Secretaries, our grateful thanks to those marking the matches : Rob Cann, Sue Dawes, Amanda and Gary Edwards, Vic Ellery, Bill Gray, Paul Harris, Geraldine Nicholls, Jeremy Pawley and Paul Robinson. Also to the Competition Umpire, Mike Friend, who oversaw the proceedings, despite nursing a recent injury.
Following a Summer of drought, the gardens and planters were still looking fabulous, for whom we must thank Val Newman and Jenny Farley for their dedication. Many thanks to Bill Gray and the Green Team of Geoff Newman, Paul Harris, Chris Bowen and Joe Shacklady, for their toil throughout the season, which continues during the Autumn and Winter.
Barry Goldsmith and Ken Penhaligon lead the Bar Team this weekend (bringing untold joy to the treasurer!) for which we are always thankful, and to Val Newman and Geraldine Nicholls who were the unsung Kitchen ‘fairies’ who kindly and quietly cleared up after us all. To the host of Club Members taking on roles this weekend as rink setter-uppers, measuring-tape ‘runners’, seat-cushion carriers, and enthusiastic supporters of all, a huge and heartfelt thank you. As ever, a team effort prevailed.
Congratulations to all, especially to the Men’s and Ladies’ Championship Winners, David Steele and Mo Penhaligon.
